City of Fairfield / Farallon Geographics GIS Management Portal Recognized by GTC
San Francisco - May 31, 2005 - On May 11, 2005, the Western Regional Government Technology Conference Advisory Board recognized the City of Fairfield, California for its innovative government solution: the GIS Management Portal, which was developed in partnership with Farallon Geographics. The award was presented by J. Clark Kelso, CIO of the State of California and Co-Chair of GTC’s 2005 Advisory Board and Lori Ruebel, GTC Western Regional Director.
Laura Peabody, CIO of Fairfield, accepted the award on behalf of the City. Ms. Peabody and Gene Cortright, Assistant Director of Public Works/Fairfield City Engineer, championed the development of the GIS Portal because they understood the difficulties involved for most City staff and stakeholders to access data that is managed and maintained in multiple departments using diverse IT hardware and software platforms. Recognizing that location could be used to integrate many departmental datasets, including Public Works, Planning, Police, and Economic Development data, Ms. Peabody engaged Farallon Geographics to deploy their GIS portal.
Farallon’s web-based GIS management portal consolidates data housed in multiple independently managed databases into a single, easy-to-use web site. The portal uses GIS technology and standard IT tools to integrate data from departments into a visual decision support tool that is used by City staff and managers to better understand and manage their assets.
Farallon Geographics developed the portal using ESRI’s ArcIMS and ArcSDE server software. Several applications were developed by the City and Farallon, including Property Review, Notification, Economic Development, and Megan’s Law Mapping. The portal also provides access to GIS metadata, standards, and contact information. The GIS management portal has provided easy access to accurate geospatial data across City departments.
