Is there such a thing as 3D GIS? - GIS & Location Technology Podcast
May 10, 2006
There is a lot of buzz around geospatial 3D right now. This is most recently highlighted by all of the news and speculation surrounding the combination of Google Earth and their free Sketchup 3D modeling software. This interest in 3D and GIS may reflect a growing fundamental change in how we work with geospatial information.
Dennis Wuthrich, Jeff Saunders and Alexei Peters of Farallon talk about 3D technology and its impending integration with traditional GIS.
- Is there such a thing as 3D GIS?
- What is the value of 3D interfaces to GIS?
- Are volumes or location in 3D space relevant GIS information?
- Engineering, Architecture and CAD rely on 3D for modeling. As they begin to use GIS, will 3D information becomes more critical as a GIS data type
- Does 3D help to reduce the level of abstraction in 2D GIS? In other words, are users better able to understand mapping and location data when it is presented in 3D?
- Will the next generation of GIS users expect 3D information and 3D interfaces?
