Case Study: City of Santa Rosa: Utilities Geodatabase Deployment and Integration

Challenge

The City of Santa Rosa needed a well structured, valid, and accurate geographically referenced data (geodata) to support a wide range of departmental business functions. But their existing workflow involved drawing maps using AutoCad, and then physically handing the paper maps to staff who manage the Hansen Asset Management System to be used as source data for asset inventory records. The City needed to automate the process of populating the asset inventory in its Asset Management System based on information in the utility maps generated with AutoCad.

Solution

Farallon developed a GIS data model in an ESRI geodatabase that automatially ingests data from AutoCad using an automated ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) process driven by FME software.  The FME-based workflow performs spatial comparisons and populates all of the spatially derived fields for every feature in the geodatabase where a spatial relationship exists. These fields, in addition to other AutoCAD derived fields, are then uploaded to the Hansen Asset Management Software using Hansen’s GeoAdministrator product.

Farallon also developed a system to represent and model the behavior of the water and sewer linear networks. A user can establish sources and sinks and then run analysis to answer real world questions such as: how many assets downstream are affected by an event?  or what are the possible upstream sources of an event?
