Case Studies on Asset Management Systems
Farallon assists Marine Science Institute / MarineMap to build a marine life protection area web application

Challenge
The Marine Life Protection Act directs the State of California to design and manage a network of multi-use marine protected ecosystems. The state needed a web-based decision support system for designing marine protected areas and communicating proposed designs.
Solution
Farallon, working with the Marine Science Institute at UCSB, developed "MarineMap", a Web 2.0 online mapping application that enables members of scientific community and general public to participate in the selection of marine environments that should be designated for conservation, recreational, and commercial uses. City of Santa Rosa: Utilities Geodatabase Deployment and Integration

Challenge
The City of Santa Rosa needed to automate the process of populating the asset inventory in its Asset Management System based on information in the utility maps generated with AutoCad.
Solution
Farallon developed a GIS data model in an ESRI geodatabase that automatially ingests data from AutoCad and uploads it to the City's Hansen Asset Management Software.
Farallon also developed a system to represent and model the behavior of the water and sewer linear networks. Read more details...

Getty Conservation Institute Web-Based GIS for Managing Jordanian Antiquities

Challenge
The Getty Conservation Institute working with the World Monuments Fund and the Jordanian Department of Antiquities wanted to develop a new national GIS to assist in inventorying, monitoring, and managing the thousands of archaeological sites in Jordan
Solution
Farallon is developing a Web-based, bilingual (Arabic-English) system that will be used by inspectors, archaeologists, scholars, and government planners involved in cultural heritage management and research. The scalable solution using open source software, will subsequently be adapted for use in Iraq and possibly other countries in the region. Read more details...

City of San Francisco Bridge Preventative Maintenance Program Web Application

Challenge
The City and County of San Francisco Department of Public Works Bureau of Engineering collects and analyzes data on over 300 structures, including pedestrian over-crossing, roadway structures and bridges. The data was distributed across multiple systems in in several locations making it difficult to reliably query and visualize necessary asset information.
Solution
Farallon created a Bridge Preventative Maintenance Program web application to allow City staff, across departments, to view and query bridge inspection reports, field-verify noted deficiencies, and develop accurate cost estimates for the repairs and maintenance of deficiencies. Read more details...

City of San Mateo Master Address Database

Challenge
Addresses are a key dataset used by the City of San Mateo to provide essential services. No single complete, accurate, and current address list existed within the City that could be used as the authoritative list of business and residential locations. This limited the ability for City departments to coordinate efforts and integrate information across business systems.
Solution
Farallon designed and deployed a Master Address Database (MAD) as a central authoritative service for all City departments. The MAD offers increased data availability, reduced errors and maintenance, elimination of duplicate data, and enhanced City services. Read more details...

GIS PavePlan Application Helps San Mateo County Manage Pavement Conditions

Challenge
San Mateo County manages over $100 million of infrastructure assets such as roads and sewer infrastructure. Pulling together information from separate GIS, pavement management software and budgeting spreadsheets was time consuming. It could take up to three months for a decision, such as asphalt resurfacing, to be agreed upon by all departments.
Solution
Farallon Geographics developed the GIS PavePlan application which automates data interchange between their cost modeling application, GIS database, and pavement scenario manager. Read more details...

City of Boston Redevelopment Authority: Web Based GIS Redevelopment Project Tracking Portal

Challenge
The Boston Redevelopment Authority manages the review process of City development projects. Over time, redevelopment related data had become spread across several independent databases making it difficult to integrate the data necessary to complete a formal redevelopment project review.
Solution
Farallon created a web application to integrate the City's permitting system with an enterprise databases using GIS . Fast and simple access to 2D & 3D maps, City GIS data, and project specific redevelopment information, was developed using web services to dynamically overlay GIS results onto Virtual Earth. Automated integration between San Mateo County’s GIS and asset management system

Challenge
San Mateo County catalogs infrastructure assets and creates preventative maintenance schedules using Hansen's asset management software. Spatial data from their GIS could automatically update corresponding location information in the asset management system. However many data fields were derived using GIS tools and then had to be entered manually.
Solution
Farallon implemented a complete automated solution that would keep the two databases in sync for all types of data. This resulted in more complete and accurate data as well as an expected labor cost savings of almost 15 times the investment. Read more details...

Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Oracle Spatial Transportation Asset Management

Challenge
UDOT maintenance division had developed an Oracle database with tabular reports to track and analyze Utah's 5,900 miles of roads and 250,000+ transportation-related assets. UDOT wanted to integrate this with a web-based map interface to make spatial and business data more accessible and allow for field verification techniques.
Solution
Farallon worked with UDOT to create an enterprise-wide spatial database building on their existing Oracle infrastructure. This allowed UDOT to pilot a spatially enabled transportation asset management system, without having to deploy a new or separate GIS. Read more details...

San Francisco street sweeping maps let residents avoid parking citations

Challenge
The complexity of street sweeping schedules in San Francisco makes it all too common for a resident to park in the wrong spot, at the wrong time, and receive a parking citation. A local entrepreneur sought a cartographic solution to this urban inconvenience.
Solution
Farallon developed neighborhood maps for public use that display street sweeping schedules by day and time. Because of the sheer volume of maps and frequently changing schedules, Farallon used ArcObjects and a geodatabase to automate the creation and easy update of these maps. Read more details...
