Challenge

The California Division of Mines and Geology (DMG), a division of the California Department of Conservation (DOC), captures and compiles statewide geologic, geo-hazard, mineral resource, and other geosciences related data. The DMG wanted a user-friendly method for its employees to access and manage the division’s spatial data.

Solution

Farallon designed and implemented a web-based application, the Seismic Hazards Mapping Program (SHMP) that allows DMG users (including county and local governments, consultants, and researchers) to view, manage, and download spatial data such as maps, images and tabular geospatial information.

Farallon first completed a needs assessment to define project goals and establish consensus. The principals design goals of the site were to:

Once the site was completed, Farallon provided training to DOC staff including representatives from: Information Technology, Division of Mines and Geology, and the Division of Recycling. Through training and documentation developed by Farallon, DOC staff can maintain and upgrade the site, as well as train new staff members.
