Contra Costa Economic Development website integrates spatially-aware database and MS Virtual Earth
Challenge
To promote economic development, Contra Costa County Community Development Department wanted a website to help real estate professionals and business owners search for properties available for development or new business locations.
Solution
Farallon developed an easy-to-use "GIS Site Locator" website that lets users enter parameters such as price range and square footage, then view matching properties on a map in MS Virtual Earth. Click on a property to display additional information, including photographs, driving directions and current traffic conditions. An RSS feed automatically keeps users updated of relevant new properties.

Voter record point data against a census block polygon layer
DNC National Election Precincts Dataset Development for 2008 Presidential Campaign
Challenge
Map the Vote, working with data from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) wanted to create a national election precinct GIS. But the costs and time required to produce the precincts layers using traditional GIS drawing methods were cost and time prohibitive.
Solution
Farallon developed automated geodatabase techniques and spatial analysis algorithms to process and validate millions of voter records. This enables organizations to cost-effectively microtarget voter turnout efforts for the 2008 Presidential campaign.
City of San Francisco Bridge Preventative Maintenance Program Web Application
Challenge
The City and County of San Francisco Department of Public Works Bureau of Engineering collects and analyzes data on over 300 structures, including pedestrian over-crossing, roadway structures and bridges. The data was distributed across multiple systems in in several locations making it difficult to reliably query and visualize necessary asset information.
Solution
Farallon created a Bridge Preventative Maintenance Program web application to allow City staff, across departments, to view and query bridge inspection reports, field-verify noted deficiencies, and develop accurate cost estimates for the repairs and maintenance of deficiencies.
GIS PavePlan Application Helps San Mateo County Manage Pavement Conditions
Challenge
San Mateo County manages over $100 million of infrastructure assets such as roads and sewer infrastructure. Pulling together information from separate GIS, pavement management software and budgeting spreadsheets was time consuming. It could take up to three months for a decision, such as asphalt resurfacing, to be agreed upon by all departments.
Solution
Farallon Geographics developed the GIS PavePlan application which automates data interchange between their cost modeling application, GIS database, and pavement scenario manager.
San Mateo County ArcSDE/Oracle Spatial Implementation
Challenge
San Mateo County wanted to wanted to deploy the map production and geocoding tools available in ArcGIS on top of their existing Oracle Spatial and Intergraph Geomedia Enterprise GIS.
Solution
Farallon configured and performance-tuned Oracle to integrate with ArcSDE and geodata access via ESRI software. Farallon also provided County staff with training and useful tools such as scripts, tips, and common troubleshooting techniques.
Integrating MDOT’s business data with its geographic data using Oracle Spatial
Challenge
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is responsible for planning, designing, building and operating the state's transportation network. MDOT's existing LRS implementation was not geographically referenced . This limited their ability to automate data validation or perform real-time spatial analyses of their network.
Solution
Farallon developed a data model to support MDOT's transportation system workflows and integrated the data with Oracle Spatial. Farallon also developed dynamic segmentation procedures to link tabular data (e.g. traffic reports) to on-the-fly to visualization of road segments. MDOT can now access mapping and business data dynamically.
Bay Area Air Quality Management District ESRI-based Enterprise GIS
Challenge
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District assesses the health risks associated with exposure to high concentrations of toxic air contaminants and comes up with a strategies to reduce risk to residents. They needed an efficient means of analyzing large volumes of data and a way to visually explain these results to policymakers and the public.
Solution
Farallon developed and implemented an enterprise-class GIS that provides BAAQMD with a central data repository to store and share data across the organization as well as perform targeted and visual analyses.
Automated integration between San Mateo County’s GIS and asset management system
Challenge
San Mateo County catalogs infrastructure assets and creates preventative maintenance schedules using Hansen's asset management software. Spatial data from their GIS could automatically update corresponding location information in the asset management system. However many data fields were derived using GIS tools and then had to be entered manually.
Solution
Farallon implemented a complete automated solution that would keep the two databases in sync for all types of data. This resulted in more complete and accurate data as well as an expected labor cost savings of almost 15 times the investment.
ISO Innovative Analytics risk management geoprocessing using Oracle Spatial
Challenge
ISO Innovative Analytics, a risk management insurance company, wanted to analyze massive amounts of unstructured historical data (both spatial and non-spatial ) in order to develop a flexible, customized and configurable nationwide set of potential risk factors. This would be used to improve the way insurance companies currently rate auto insurance policies.
Solution
Farallon developed a series of pre-processing services and custom data structures for the intensive geoprocessing using Oracle Spatial 10g. Tens of millions of individual policy locations were combined with historical claims records to determine predictive correlations between potential risk factors and location of policy holders.
Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Oracle Spatial Transportation Asset Management
Challenge
UDOT maintenance division had developed an Oracle database with tabular reports to track and analyze Utah's 5,900 miles of roads and 250,000+ transportation-related assets. UDOT wanted to integrate this with a web-based map interface to make spatial and business data more accessible and allow for field verification techniques.
Solution
Farallon worked with UDOT to create an enterprise-wide spatial database building on their existing Oracle infrastructure. This allowed UDOT to pilot a spatially enabled transportation asset management system, without having to deploy a new or separate GIS.
