Case Studies
Nothing shows Farallon's capabilities or commitment to customer satisfaction better than real-life case studies of our projects.
California Highway Patrol E-911 Enterprise GIS
Challenge
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is the Primary Call Answering Point for all cellular phone emergency 911 calls in the state of California. They needed to define a strategic plan to keep their Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system data up-to-date.
Solution
Farallon developed a GIS Strategic Business Plan that provided CHP with a flexible enterprise GIS structure to support multiple departments and business processes including their CAD 911 emergency response for a portion of California.
City of Fairfield Enterprise Geodatabase
Challenge
The City of Fairfield (Fairfield) faced several challenges in building a functional Enterprise GIS. Fairfield had fragmented, disparate technologies and limited communication with potential external GIS partners. Fairfield needed an enterprise-wide strategic GIS to integrate many departmental datasets, including Public Works, Planning, Police, and Economic Development data.
Solution
Farallon recommended that Fairfield develop an enterprise geodatabase using ESRI's ArcSDE software and Microsoft's SQL Server database. From this, Farallon built a variety of GIS applications that support business functions of the city and it various departments, including a geospatial portal that allows all city staff to quickly create notification lists and summary reports for any property within the city.
Caltrans - Linear Referencing System (LRS) Data Model
Challenge
The California Department of Transportation, (Caltrans) is a large agency that supports numerous departments, business processes, projects and personnel. A subset of Caltrans tasked with the maintenance and analysis of road data, was working to develop map-based asset management and analysis. It needed a way to leverage existing transportation asset data and create a system with the flexibility to withstand future changes in technology and data collection.
Solution
Farallon developed a new data model based on Caltrans' existing linear referencing system (LRS). The new model allows for a multitude of highway system data (road conditions, terrain specifics, surrounding properties) that were measured in disparate methods to be used geospatially for location referencing needs.
City of Walnut Creek - GIS and General Plan Mapping, Formatting, and Layout Support
Challenge
The City of Walnut Creek was on a tight deadline to update their General Plan and needed to generate a large number of maps from their GIS. They also wanted a solution and the necessary training to allow their non-technical staff to use the GIS as a tool for map production in future analyses.
Solution
Farallon assessed the existing GIS and provided production services for the required maps. Farallon helped create GIS templates, documentation, and workflow training so that the City staff could develop maps without depending upon GIS specialists.
San Mateo County Enterprise GIS
Challenge
The County of San Mateo had developed its GIS capabilities over time, resulting in many departmental GIS implementations that operated autonomously and independently. This organizational approach to GIS led to the duplication of important framework geospatial datasets resulting in undesirable data redundancy, data inconsistency, and unnecessary duplication of effort.
Solution
Farallon developed a GIS Utility and departmental governance structure, as well as an enterprise collaboration model developed through interviews with departments and County management. Once the Enterprise GIS was implemented, Farallon developed a GIS web-based portal as well as other web-based applications requiring GIS data, including notification and asset management.
Bureau of Indian Affairs Land Management System
Challenge
The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Division of Real Estate Services manages all land held in trust for California Indian Tribes. The Pacific Regional Office needed to develop and deploy a working land management system that would support business needs and leverage partnerships with other Federal Agencies and Indian tribes on a very aggressive timeframe.
Solution
Farallon designed and built an ArcSDE geodatabase on Oracle to support web/map publication of an enterprise GIS to manage the State of California's Indian Lands. The GIS integrates diverse geodata from a number of federal, state, and local sources to describe the extent, ownership, and use of Indian Nation lands within California and western Nevada.
Web-based Seismic Hazards Mapping for the California Department of Conservation
Challenge
The California Division of Mines and Geology (DMG) captures and compiles statewide geologic, and geohazard data. They wanted a user-friendly method for cities and counties to access information about and plan for seismic hazard zones.
Solution
Farallon designed and implemented a web-based application, the Seismic Hazards Mapping Program that allows DMG users (county and local governments, consultants, and researchers) to view, manage, and download seismic data presented as maps, images and tabular geospatial information.
San Mateo County Assessor/County Clerk/Recorder Business Process Analysis
Challenge
San Mateo County's Clerk-Assessor-Recorder-Elections department (CARE) processes and records most of the information that is input into the County's system. Since most of the recorded information supports spatial processes, CARE wanted a way to improve the recording procedure and understand how it could be extended to support other County processes using a central Oracle database and the County's spatial data.
Solution
After a thorough needs assessment of the current County processes, Farallon created an implementation plan that when executed would improve the County's revenue collection timeframe and ability to forecast annual revenue streams.
Kinder Morgan Energy Partners Liquid Fuel Pipeline Control Center Emergency Response GIS
Challenge
Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (KMEP) is the nation's largest liquid fuel pipeline transmission company. Long sections of KMEP's most vital pipeline sections run along railroad rights-of-way. When a trail derails, KMEP must quickly determine whether the pipeline network has been compromised, where the nearest shut-off valves are, and how to get inspection and repair crews to the accident scene.
Solution
Farallon created an ArcSDE geodatabase in Oracle with a web interface that tracks over 3000 miles of railroad and pipeline GIS data, 30,000,000 street segments nation wide. It allows KMEP staff instant and intuitive access to the entire Pacific Region pipeline network faciltating the process of locating a leak and executing a response. With this integral tool KMEP can react within seconds, rather than hours.
Santa Clara County Assessor Office Online Tax Assessment Viewer
Challenge
Santa Clara County houses some of the world's leading technology firms. With the technology boom in the late 90s there was a surge in population and the housing market. Santa Clara County needed an accessible and intuitive way for both County staff and home-owners to access property data while also managing the influx of people visiting the County offices.
Solution
Farallon built and deployed an Oracle 9i database that provides access to over 2 million records related to property values, tax assessments, situs addresses, and tax rate areas for the entire Santa Clara County. By designing a web application with a user-friendly interface, the Assessor's Office Assessment Roll Information Inquiry and Retrieval application, both County staff and County residents can access up-to-the-minute property assessment information for the current and past three tax years without ever having to go to the County Assessor's office.
