Fast, Easy and Convenient - The value proposition for Enterprise GIS mashups - Episode 8
Posted on April 18, 2007 by Fargeo Team
This is a recording of a presentation from the CalGIS 200 Conference on April 4-6 2007.
The talk explores how Google Maps, Google Earth, MS Virtual Earth and other emerging technologies can be integrated with traditional GIS tools such as geodatabases and ArcGIS server to deliver useful applications to broad user communities. These “enterprise mashups” promise to dramatically improve the dissemination of GIS data and analyses to people while significantly reducing the cost of deploying and maintaining GIS.

The Relevance of Emerging Geospatial Technologies for IT - Episode 7
Posted on December 04, 2006 by Fargeo Team
This is a recording of a presentation from the MISAC Northern California Chapter Meeting Nov 17th 2007.
IT professionals have long recognized that geodata (geographically referenced information such as parcels, streets, addresses, and aerial photographs) represent a common information asset needed across departmental and agency boundaries. Unfortunately, managing, analyzing, and publishing geodata have often required expensive and complex GIS software solutions. However, new and emerging low-cost and no-cost IT technologies now promise to take GIS out of the back-office and unlock new potential from your geodata investment. Using familiar IT tools and strategies such as databases, web services, and XML, organizations can deploy GIS solutions that leverage spatially aware relational database management systems like Oracle Express, free SOA-based mapping API’s like Google Maps and Google Earth, and open source software like Autodesk Mapguide to manage data, integrate systems, and deliver compelling geospatial applications for a fraction of the cost of traditional GIS.

Public mapping technology and private data: can we have the best of both worlds? - Episode 6
Posted on November 27, 2006 by Fargeo Team
Farallon is currently working on several projects that seamlessly integrate public mapping technology such as Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth, with in-house GIS data requiring detailed local cartography, parcel maps, centerlines, and building details.
- When is it appropriate to consider using a public mapping API in an enterprise GIS project
- What are the key strengths of public APIs
- If I already own a GIS system and GIS data, does the addition of the public mapping technology offer me any gains
- At a regional scale, public mapping APIs are fast, inexpensive and provide good cartography, but what happens when you need to view detailed local data from a traditional GIS
- How can you seamlessly transition from viewing data with a public API solution, to viewing the data on a detailed local scale using an enterprise’s specific in-house data
- What are tiling caches. Can I seamlessless shift between tiling schemes?
- What about using 3D building models on a map
